Here are the steps to create a new workbook from a template in Excel:
Step 1: Click the File tab to access Backstage view.
Step 2: Select New. Several templates will appear below the blank workbook option. Select a template to review it.
Step 3: A preview of the template will appear, along with additional information on how the template can be used. Click Create to use the selected template.
A new workbook will appear with the selected template.

You can also browse templates by category or use the search bar to find something more specific.
How to create template in Excel
If you create your own template, you can safely store it in the Templates folder. As a result, you can create new workbooks based on this template without worrying that you overwrite the original file.
To create a template, execute the following steps.
Step 1: Create a workbook.
Step 2: On the File tab, click Save As, then Browse.
Step 3: Enter a file name and select Excel Template (*.xltx) from the drop-down list.
Excel automatically activates the Templates folder. Notice the location of the Templates folder on your computer. It’s usually located here:
C:\Users\Documents\Custom Office Templates
Finally hit on Save button.
To create a workbook based on this template, execute the following step.
Step 4: On the File tab, click New then Personal.
Select your custom template and start using it.
Excel compatibility mode
Sometimes you may need to work with workbooks that were created in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, such as Excel 2003 or Excel 2000. When you open these types of workbooks, they will appear in Compatibility Mode.
