How to split large files using WinRar

Have you ever wanted to upload and share a 500 MB file with your friends using an online file sharing service but you want to upload the file in smaller chunks and there is also another reason for it, many of free upload file hosting site does not support and provide resume option and it will result for loosing large file due to some technical problem from both users and servers hand.

Then how can you split a big file into multiple chunks and upload it to the file sharing service? WinRAR can help you do that. Once you open the file up in this program, you can split it with just a few clicks.

To use WinRar, you need to download it. After downloading WinRar, install it. With WinRar installed, you can now split huge files into several smaller files.

Following are the step by step procedures which you need to follow:

Step 1: Locate the huge file that you want to split. for the purpose of our demo, we are using Android SDK file that is 540 MB in size.

Step 2: To start splitting, Right click on the file that you want to split, choose the option “Add to archive“.

Right click and select the option add to archive

Step 3: In the dialog box that appears, the archive format is set to RAR by default, and the file name is appended with .rar. You can keep these default settings else you can change it as appropriate.

Keep RAR as your file format and if you wish you can change your file name too

Step 4: In the “Split to volumes, size” section, you can pick the categories there to split the file into pre-defined sizes like 5MB, 100 MB or 700MB. But you can also specify your own file size in MB.

In our case we entered 100 MB for each chunk of file. Click “OK” and wait for few seconds. WinRar compress the source file and splits it in to several files.

Select your each file chunk size from Split to volumes option

Step 5: After clicking on “OK” button, the compression and the splitting of the select file will proceed like below screenshot.

Step 6: When the process is completed, all the smaller files will be stored in the same location as the source file. Also, these smaller files are numbered appended with “part” in the filename. Here is our result with the 540 MB file being split into 6 smaller files.
