Install Let’s Encrypt free SSL Certificate in Just 2 minutes – WordPress CMS

You have now successfully verified your domain as well as generated SSL certificate for your WordPress site.

The next step is to download this SSL certificate and install it on your WordPress site.

How to install SSL certificate

Installing SSL certificate is much simple and here are the steps which you need to follow:

Step 1: Visit “Download Certs” tab from WP Encryption WordPress plugin and download three files form it namely – “cert file”, “key file” and “ca bundle”

You can open these files through Notepad or any text editor, this is important to know because in the following steps we are going to copy paste these files content into the appropriate text area.

Step 2: Visit your hosting account cPanel dashboard then under Security -> SSL/TLS, click on it.

Step 3: You will have four options select the last option – “Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS).

Step 4: Select your domain from the list.

Step 5: Paste “cert file” content into “Certificate:(CRT)” text area.

Step 6: Paste key file content into “Private Key (KEY)” text area.

Step 7: Paste ca bundle content into “Certificate Authority Bundle: (CABUNDLE)” text area.

Then click “Install Certificate” button.

Installation can take few seconds then you would see the following screen which reads – SSL Certificate successfully updated.

Click “OK” button.

You have successfully installed SSL certificate on shared hosting account but your job is not yet finished. All URLs are with HTTP so you need to change every URL to HTTPS version.

Updating WordPress URLs after setting up SSL

After setting up SSL certificate with Let’s Encrypt through WP Encryption WordPress plugin, the next step is to move your WordPress URL from HTTP to HTTPS.

Having said, let’s see how to move WordPress URLs from HTTP to HTTPS:

For brand new WordPress website

Step 1: Go to WordPress dashboard Settings -> General.

Visit WordPress admin area

Step 2: General settings page will be displayed. Add https:// to the beginning of both the “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)”. Then update your settings by clicking “Save Changes”. Once saved, you might need to log in again afterward.

For existing WordPress website

If your WordPress website has been live for a while, then chances are that it is indexed by search engines. Other people may have linked to it using HTTP in the URL. You need to make sure that all traffic is redirected to the HTTPS URL.

Come back to WP Encryption dashboard and click on “Enable HTTPS now” button which fixes insecure content issue including enforce your WordPress site to load strictly over https://.

Update URLs for existing WordPress website (Without plugin – 301 redirects in .htaccess)

If you want to force your entire WordPress website to go through HTTPS, but without use of plugin then you can do this with the help of .htaccess file.

This is an important and powerful system file located in the root directory of your website. It usually contains settings of the permalink.
